Summit on Democracy

Here’s an update on the first Summit on Democracy that President Biden hosted last week as part of his election promise to confront authoritarianism. Invited leaders from multiple sectors and countries attended to create an agenda for renewing democracy and combating threats to it. At the link above, you can find recorded sessions, Official Intervention statements from countries in attendance, FAQs, and more information. On this webpage from The White House, you can find remarks from President Biden and Vice President Harris. To read more about the outcomes thus far, as well as questions concerning the attendees and stability of American democracy, check out these articles from Reuters and the New York Times.

Redistricting updates & resources

In tune with the democracy theme, here are some updates and resources concerning redistricting in Minnesota. From last week, this article from MPR covers the redistricting work that the MN House of Representatives has started. Legislators must finish the redistricting process by mid-February, otherwise courts will assume the responsibility. Here’s a Session Daily article from the MN Legislature explaining how the redrawing fell along partisan lines and the House Redistricting Committee then approved the DFL-backed maps. For additional resources, check out this 2021 Redistricting Guide from the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State and this tool from Politico that allows you to search by your state to stay updated on whether it has adopted new district lines yet, as well as look at previous maps and voting margins by district from the 2020 presidential election.

“While derision from authoritarian governments excluded from a pro-democracy summit might be expected, even U.S. officials concede that America’s republic is straining under political polarization, racial injustice and discord, voting rights restrictions and domestic extremism, among other issues.”  “Biden Rallies Global Democracies as U.S. Hits a ‘Rough Patch’” — New York Times, 12-9-21
