Dane Smith is the Senior Fellow and President Emeritus of Growth & Justice, having led the organization from 2007 to 2018. Smith has overseen major accomplishments and initiatives during his decade at the helm and has established Growth & Justice as a constructive and practical voice for a more inclusive and equitable economy in Minnesota. Smith’s career also includes 30 years in journalism, reporting and writing on politics and government for the Minneapolis Star, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, and the Star Tribune. From 1986 to 2007 he was the lead state politics reporter for the Star Tribune at the state capitol and covered a wide variety of public policy issues. He co-authored a book, Professor Wellstone Goes to Washington, chronicling the late Sen. Paul Wellstone’s 1990 campaign, and studied for a year at Stanford University as a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow. Smith has served as chairman of the Inver Hills Community College Alumni Board of Directors and is involved in advocacy for improving higher-education attainment and equity. A native of Texas who grew up in Alaska, he served four years in the U.S. Navy and moved to Minnesota in 1971. He has been a resident of the Highland Park neighborhood in St. Paul for more than 30 years.
